Shirley Jean Clemmons
Shirley Jean was born on December 6,1944, in St.
Louis, Missouri, and lived a long legacy-filled life of eighty
years. She was the oldest of three daughters born to
Charles and Mamie Mace, Jr. who preceded her in death.
Her educational years were received in the St. Louis City
Public Schools System, where she attended Garfield
Elementary School and was a proud graduate of
Beaumont High School. She met the love of her life, O.C.
Their marriage blossomed with two daughters, Lisa and
Tawanda.
Shirley was a wonderful, warm-hearted, gentle soul
who found her niche in the insurance industry. While
working for several insurance companies, her last
employment was with NIE Casualty Company as an
Insurance Rater. After a brief retirement, Shirley joined
the staff of two daycare centers. She discovered working
in early childhood brought her immense joy while
keeping her vibrant.
Shirley embraced Christ at at an early age at Greater
Bethlehem Baptist Church under the leadership of The
Late Rev. Cleophus Robinson. She attended St. Peter’s
House of Prayer, under The Late Rev. Charles Swearengen.
She truly loved the Lord and was active in
the church as a soloist, choir member and organizer of
many church programs. Shirley was known for her
melodious and resounding voice. She was faithful in her
service in the church until her health began to decline.
Until the end, she lived out her favorite songs: “He’s an
On Time God” and “I Won’t Complain”.
Family gatherings and preparing meals for the
holidays were what Shirley loved most. She shared a
close and deep affection for her daughters and sisters.
She enjoyed shopping, watching television, keeping
regular hair appointments and going to her favorite
restaurant for lunch, “Red Lobster”.
Shirley was a fighter in every sense of the word. She
faced life’s challenges head on with strength, resilience
and unwavering determination. No matter how tough
things got, she always pushed through. She transitioned
peacefully on Monday, April 7, 2025.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory: a beloved
husband, O.C. Clemmons; two devoted daughters, Lisa
Renee Sims (Raymond) and Tawanda Yvette Clemmons;
two caring sisters, Sharlyn Denise McCall and Donna
Marie Westmoland (Donel) all of St. Louis, MO; one
precious granddaughter, Alyssiea Renee Robinson of
Atlanta, GA; two charismatic grandsons, Raymond
Andrew Sims and Alexander O.C. Robinson of St. Louis,
MO; one true-blue sister-in-law of Phoenix, AZ, Rev.
Dorothy Jean Thomas; loyal friends, Karen Miller and
Evelyn Griffin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,
church family, neighbors and friends.
