Michael Henry Whitson

December 9, 1944 — June 3, 2010

Life Reflections of Michal H. WhitsonOn December 9, 1944, Floyd Whitson and Theda Banks welcomed their second son, Michael "Mike", into one of the oldest families in Kirkwood - a fact that would resonate with him throughout his life, He was baptized at Olive Chapel A.M.E. Church, which his great-grandfather, Henry Whitson, helped establish. Mike graduated from Kirkwood High School, attended Lincoln University and served a stint in the United States Navy, Despite the allure of other places he traveled he came home to stay, and became a letter carrier in the very neighborhoods he knew so welL Mike married Mirla Wand in 1965. As his father had done with his brother, Doogie, and him, Mike raised their daughters, Laura and Teresa with unyielding devotion and determination, He doted on his grandchildren, Michael Phillips, Christopher Owens, Lauren Owens, Romeo Thurman, Cameron Thurman and Alexis Wagner. Following a harrowing accident that ended his active postal career, Mike continued his involvement with the Postal Union after his retirement, and increasingly grew more active in other civic endeavors, Among these were: American Legion Post 156, Kirkwood Kiwanis Club, Father Dickson Cemetery Society, Club 44, Youth In Action, and the Black History Committee of Kirkwood Historic Society. He received several citations for his work in the community. On June 3, 20 10, his father and brothers, Floyd (Doogie) Whitson, Jr., and Robert Rollins, Jr., welcomed Mike to the glory he knew with every fiber of his being awaited him. Mourning his passing, but rejoicing in his being are: his mother, Theda Rollins; daughters, Laura Whitson and Teresa Thurmon; grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Lauren, Romeo, Cameron and Alexis; sisters, Patricia Rollins and Linda Vaughn; cousins, Cynthia Washington, Lavinia Whitson, Carter Whitson, Safiya Keeton, Nicole Whitson, Ruel Keeton and Carrie Whitson; and very close friends, Joe Cole, Luther Fortune. Otis Harris and Garv Hicks. Services held: The Williams-James Mortuary, Inc. - Chapel Interment: Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery St. Louis, Missouri 63126 Officiant: Pastor Harry Jones .
