Mary Elizabeth Metcalf

Life Reflections Mary Thompson-Metcalf was born September 3, 1941 in St. Louis, MO to Eddie and Jessie Thompson. She was the third born of six children. She graduated from Maplewood Richmond Heights Nigh School. Mary went on to attend Beauty College. Beauty College was fitting for her because she was a beauty both inside and out.She was one of the first black women to headline outside of the United States. She was huge hit innight, clubs in London, Paris and the far East. She broke box office records in Tokyo 1960. In fact, she was able to travel the world, make a living, and was even inducted into the Burlesque Hall of Fame as a result of her outer beauty. At an early age, she attended San Francisco Temple, where she was baptized. She was employed by Algonquin Nurses for several years. In 1970 she was married to Denzil Metcalf, that brought forth the birth of their daughter Mary Ann Metcalf. Mary was a quiet, humble, and extremely kind person. She loved her family and would find joy in having conversations with family and friends. Mary leaves in memory: her loving daughter, Mary Ann (Carlton) Strickland, as well as her grandchildren, Antonio (Nandi) Metcalf, Alexis Lewis, Courtney Strickland and a great-grandsonKayden Metcalf, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Eddie and Jessie Thompson, 1 grandson Naki Lewis, Jr., five brothers, Joseph Jones, Henry Thompson, Eddie Thompson, Michal Thompson and Gene Thompson whom she loved dearly. Mary passed on October 17, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Crewe Coeur, MO. She was loved and will be missed by many. Interment:St. Peter's Cemetery2101 Lucas and Hunt Rd.St. Louis, MO 63121 .
