Lee Bertha Moses

March 22, 1938 — August 6, 2010

Obituary Mrs. Lee Bertha Moses was born March 22, 1938, to the late Scynuel Sr. and Elnora Mondaine. Two sisters (Daisy and Rosalie) and one brother (Samuel Jr.) preceded her in death. Lee attended the old Lincoln Elementary and Douglas High Schools. At the age of thirteen, Lee confessed a hope in Christ and was baptised under the leadership of Reverend Edwards at the First Baptist Church of Maplewood where she remained a faithful member for over fifty years and served as a member of the choir, the drama and pastor's aide ministries, WMU, the Sunday School and the Mothers Board. Lee Bertha was united in holy matrimony to John Moses, who along with one son (John) and two daughters (Eloise and Barbara) preceded her in death . Lee, known to most as 'Granny', loved and enjoyed life. She opened her home and heart to everyone. Lee loved to cook, make hats and play cards. Lee Bertha Moses was a trusted and loyal employee of businessman and philanthropist. Sidney Shoenberg for over 30 years. Sis. Moses was highly regarded and loved by the Shoenberg family and staff members of his other business enterprises. Lee discovered her gifts of writing, speech and music early in life. She never kept those gifts to herself but rather shared them with the'church and entire community. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Maplewood for over fifty years, she could be found on any given Sunday sharing her gift of song in the soprano section of the choir either leading a favorite song or rendering a solo. Through her anointed hands, she was sought after by first ladies all over the city and county for one of her 'designer original' church hats. If you wanted to look your 'Sunday's Best', Sis. Moses could deliver. She was a gifted orator of the works of great African American authors like James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes and others. Lee became well known for her dramatic recitation of poems, 'The Creation, The Negro Mother and the Hellbound Train, just to mention a few. Her presentations were mesmerizing and were received with great anticipation and delight by many church congregations. She was a 'must have' guest for numerous church and pastor anniversaries as well as women's day celebrations. Her gift of encouragement drew many young men and women to her doorstep. She always had a word of wisdom and an attentive ear. Once she was finished sharing a word of hope, she shared from her kitchen one of her specialty homecooked meals. It's almost as if her pots were never empty. She was blessed to always be ready to serve the troubled and broken hearted, both spiritually and physically. Only after she had taken care of everyone else would she take care of herself. God gave her a great eye for beauty that was evidenced in her personal style. However, her love of beautiful suits, hats shoes and jewelry did not overshadow her humble and generous spirit towards others When her health permitted, she loved the freedom to be able to get in her car and drive near and far to be able to see about others or to meet up with her friends to take in a movie or to go to have a Sunday meal at one of her all time favorite restaurants, Red Lobster. While in this most recent season of her life, she was seriously preparing to pursue writing classes and resuming hat designing. Although she was not able to fulfill those dreams, she still enjoyed attending worship services and spending time with family and friends. God filled Lee Bertha with laughter, joy and light. We love her; but God loves her best. Lee Bertha leaves to cherish her memory: 3 daughters (Mary Ann Allen, Linda Skinner and Marguerite Smith-Pruitt); 2 sons (Terrence and Michael); 1 sister (Paula Mondaine); 2 brothers (Roderick Mondaine, Sr. and David Mondaine of La Jolla, CA); one uncle (Albert Mondaine); one aunt (Olivette Mondaine); one daughter-in-law (Kimberly Moses); 1 son-in-law (Hardie Pruitt); 3 sisters-in-law; 36 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and 3 spiritual sons and a host of extended family and loving friends. Interment -Laurel Hill CemeteryPagedale,MO 63133 .
