After high schooL he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. at Camp Stewart, Georgia. Shortly after his discharge from Camp Stewart, he joined the Army of the United States. While serving he was awarded a Victory and Good Conduct Medal before receiving his honorable discharge. After being discharged from the military, he and Marie Durham were married on November II, 1949 in Marietta, Georgia. In 1952, they moved to Saint Louis, Missouri where they raised their seven children. He attended Harris-Stowe State College and received a degree in tailoring. He was an entrepreneur as a tailor and painter. He later went on to work at the United States Postal Service for 28 years, where he retired in 1989. John loved his family dearly. His favorite past time activities included reading, gardening, fishing, playing dominos and watching movies. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Marie; four sons, Johns H. Carter, III (Wanda), Bruce Carter, Alan Carter (Valerie) and Darren Carter; two daughters, Valerie Norful (Ervin) and Lillious Lumpkins; one sister, Gloria Merritt; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great-great- grandson, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. The Day God Called You Home God looked around filS garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. His garden must be beautifuL he always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain And knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw your path was difficult, he closed your tired eyes, He whispered to you, "Peace be Thine" and gave you wings to fly. When we saw you sleeping so calm and free of pain, We would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again. You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide, You live on through your children, you're always by our side. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone For part of us went with you on the day God called you home. Interment -J.B. National Cemetery2900 SheridanSt. Louis, MO 62126 .
