When World War II began he felt compelled to enlist; he joined the Navy and served six years, some of which was in occupied Japan. After his discharge, he was adventurous and tried his hand at many professions, but the one that he settled on was farming. He had a bold blooming laugh that came from some place deep and made you want to laugh with him.
