Life ReflectionsHerbert Lawrence Whitner was born in St. Louis County, Missouri on October 23, 1948 to Hugo and Marion Whitner. At an early age Herbert confessed a belief in Jesus Christ, and was baptized at The Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond Hleights, Missouri by Rev. James E. Fiddmont.Herbert was educated in St. Louis County schools where he earned his diploma in 1966 from Webster Groves High School. He furthered his education at Forest Park Community College and UMSL in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of 20, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps, serving in the Vietnam War and received an Honorable Discharge for patriotic service. He received the following decorations: National Defense ServiCe MedaL Vietnam Service MedaL Navy Commendation MedaL Combat Action Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.When he returned from Military Service he began his lifetime ambition as a Law Enforcement Officer. After graduating from the St. Louis City Police Academy his journey in law enforcement began with the City of Brentwood, followed by City of Richmond tleights, on to become a Missouri State Trooper, and finally a City of Berekley Police Officer where he served until he became ill. Herbert served the communities and State of Missouri for over 28 years.Herbert fell in love with the girl next door, and on September 16, 1972 was united in Holy Matrimony to Mary L. Harden. Of this union came 4 daughters, and he loved his family. Herbert was loved, respected and admired by all who knew him. He was a caring and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, loyal friend and neighbor. He was affectionately called "Boogie", Super Blue", and "Big Dog" by his family and friends. His infectious charm and charisma would light up any room. He was an avid sports fan, and huge lover of baseball, and played on many local teams. He was always willing to help someone out whether on or off duty. Herbert was an outstanding Individual and a leader who will be missed by all.Herbert fell asleep in death on October 1, 2010 after fighting a courageous 11 years battle with declining health following a stroke. He was preceded in death by his father, tlugo Whitner. He leaves to cherish his loving memory: his mother, Marion Whitner; wife, Mary Whitner; four daughters, Vonda Taylor (Jimmy), Tiffany Whitner, Krystal Walker (James), and Kimberly Whitner; one son, Cortez tlull (Tanya); three brothers, Emerson Sutton, Jr., Leon Bernard Whitner, Jerry Whitner; two grandchildren, Mya Whitner, and Quinn Hull; mother and father- in-law, the Robison; long time caregiver, Amanda tlollis, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and devoted friends. Interment -J.B. National Cemetery2900 SheridanSt. Louis, MO .
