George H. Hawkins

March 25, 1922 — April 12, 2009

George was united in holy matrimony to Ruth Elizabeth Madison in May 1974, and together they raised their two children, Robert Madison and Brenda Madison and his nephew, Keith. "Mr. George", as he was known, was the oldest living male remaining in Elmwood Park. While not attending any church he had a Christian heart of giving love to everyone each day of his life. He believed in sharing his home with those who needed a place to go or a loving hand. His kindness drew many to him. George worked from sun up to sun down as a farmer, and enjoyed every minute of it as a young man. He began working for St. Louis County Highway Department June 27, 1960 and retired August I, 1987. He vowed never to work again. He spent his time helping others, and most of all collecting and smashing cans. His favorite television show was Matlock and Jerry Springer. Sunday, April 12th, early Easter morning at 4:15 a.m. God softly closed the book and summoned him to eternal rest. He leaves to cherish his memories: two children, Robert and Brenda Madison; two grandchildren, Isiah Williams and Charnell Fisher; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Phillip Hawkins; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Jones and Mary Madison; one brother-in-law, Donald Johnston; and two special friends, Thaha Watson and Lloyd Alexander; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Internment: Saint Peters Cemetery Saint Peters, Missouri .
