Arthur Jackson, Sr.

September 2, 1932 — July 2, 2018

Life's Reflections Arthur Jackson Sr. transitioned to his eternal home on July 2, 2018 while surrounded by his cherished family. His passions were family, Cardinal baseball, politics and current affairs. Arthur worked, tirelessly, for the Hillary Clinton and Claire McCaskill political campaigns. As the self-proclaimed "grandfather of the Central West End," he was interviewed by several news stations and was often seen on the street corner, holding self-made posters supporting various causes. As a former St Louis County Correctional officer, Arthur had a love for the law and community service. He served at Catholic Charities and later attended Cardinal Ritter Adult Daycare which he called his "retirement job." Arthur Jackson, Sr. was born in St. Louis, MO in The Ville neighborhood to the union of Johnetta (Pierce) and Robert Lee Jackson. Preceding him in death were his mother Johnetta, father Robert; sisters Dorothy Mae, Louise and Doris, and brother Robert Jr. Arthur was educated in the St Louis Public School system and was a lifelong learner. He spent countless hours in public and college libraries educating himself and emphasized education to his children and grandchildren. He served in the Army in the Korean War during the years when the Armed Forces were being racially integrated. After an honorable discharge, Arthur returned home and married, Lorraine Gregory, his childhood sweetheart from The Ville neighborhood. They lived together for 17 years, had 9 children and remained friends until Lorraine's death in November 2017, Arthur was raised in the Church of God in Christ. He was a member of Kennerly Temple Church of God in Christ in his youth. He recommitted his life to Christ while attending Life Center International Church of God in Christ and was strengthened in his faith while attending Bostick Temple Church of God in Christ. He looked forward to church at Bostick every Sunday. Arthur felt especially blessed worshipping at Bostick Temple, the Church his mother had attended before her passing. He enjoyed Sunday School and singing the old hymns and anthems that he grew up hearing his mother sing. Arthur is survived by his 10 children, Valerie Jackson (Jacki), Sheila Scales (Rodney), Arthur Jackson Jr. (Susie), Toni Beard (William), Michael Jackson (Marcia), Barry Jackson, Christine Allen (Wayne), Rhonda Adams (Marcus), Donna Porter (Ron), and Byron Demetrius Word (DanYelle), 17 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, his sister Thelma, his brother Curtis, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Arthur will be remembered for his fierce independence, his delightful sense of humor, his devotion to his family and his love of his community. To anyone who would listen, Arthur would say, 'A lot of good things came from The Ville," Ali who knew him counted Art Jackson Sr. as one of those good things. .
