Andrew Mckenzie

October 23, 1937 — July 8, 2017

Life ReflectionsAndrew McKenzie, noted Christian, union leader and entrepreneur, was born on October 23, 1937 to the union of Lee McGruder and Bettie Johnson McKenzie. Both parents along with sisters Virgil Carter, Yolanda Williams, Patroella McKenzie and Elizabeth Mckenzie LaGrone, preceded him in death. Andrew attended Vashon High School and Washington Technical High School, where he played the trumpet and joined the choir. Andrew confessed a hope in Christ early in life at Rock of Ages Baptist Church. He grew up part of a bustling St. Louis, along Franklin and Jefferson Avenues, where he eventually united with his beloved Calvary Missionary Baptist Church family. He served in the music ministry, on the Deacon/Trustee Board and also accepted his call to preach the gospel in 1985. He was very active until his health failed in 2008. Andrew earned his high school accreditation while serving in the U.S Air Force in the State of Florida. He earned other certifications relating to union work. He was a leader in the local 160 union and ultimately became International President of ILGPNWU. Andrew served on the Boards of Adult Basic Education for St. Louis Public Schools and Literacy Council of Greater St. Louis and Vicinity for many years. He also attended St. Louis Community College. Andrew McKenzie and Dorothy Marsh were united in holy matrimony on July 19, 1964. She was the greatest fortune of love and companionship that he cherished. As parents, they loved and cherished their son, Andre'. Their bonus children Cecil, Dionne and Phyllis also shared their love. Mr. Andrew Mckenzie, a St. Louis original spirit, abruptly departed this life on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at his home. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife Dorothy J. Mckenzie; sons - Andre' F. McKenzie and Cecil Farrell; daughters Dionne Goatley (Wil) and Phyllis Halbert; grandchildren - Jordan McKenzie, Jakobe McKenzie; nephew John LaGrone; a host of cousins, nieces, godchildren, other family and friends.
